We recently took a family trip to Mexico, and let’s just say it didn’t go quite as planned.

Each time I have the immense privilege of travelling the way I do, with or without kids, I feel insanely grateful for my toolbox of essential oils and supplements.

Here are the top ways essential oils came in very, very handy on our recent trip.

Tummy trouble:

We brushed our teeth with bottled water. In fact, we did everything but live off pudding cups for the week, and a few of us still got sick.  My one daughter suffered through a virus more than issues from food or water, but regardless; The following doTERRA supplements and oils were game changers in the digestion department:

Terrazyme, Digestive Enzyme Complex. We took this with all of our meals (and extra whenever our stomach felt a little off).

PRIMARY BENEFITS • Supports healthy digestion and metabolism of enzyme-deficient, processed foods* • Supports conversion of food nutrients to cellular energy* • Promotes gastrointestinal comfort and food tolerance* • Supports healthy production of metabolic enzymes* • Proprietary blend of 10 active whole-food enzymes • Contains the do –TERRA tummy tamer blend of Peppermint, Ginger, and Caraway Seed

DigestZen essential oil blend (or ‘ZenGest’ in Canada). With oils of Ginger, Peppermint, Caraway, Coriander, Anise, Tarragon, and Fennel, it’s known for it’s ability to ease stomach discomfort. I personally take it most often in a vegetable capsule or pre-made softgel, but rubbing a drop or two (diluted in some coconut oil) on the belly provides almost instant relief as well. For the kids, we do just 1 drop diluted, or we use the perfectly pre-diluted rollerball bottles in the touch line.

Motion sickness:

When you’re travelling, there are usually a few situations like turbulence on an airplane or bumpy windy roads that can cause stomach upset. I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand the drowsy feeling that anti-nausea medication gives me. I would totally rather feel nauseous. I also hate how that same medication takes a while to kick in. So, if you suddenly find yourself with a child who unexpectedly starts feeling sick, you have a good fifteen minutes at least after taking the medication to wait for relief. What I love about essential oils is that they can provide almost immediate relief (and they have no side effects – like drowsiness).

Peppermint and Ginger are two of the oils in the DigestZen blend that we will often use individually. Sometimes one or the other is more effective, depending on what our bodies need in the moment.  Sometimes I apply them topically on the belly with a pre-diluted roller bottle, or put a drop in my palms and just inhale.

Travel Germs:

Breathing recycled air in an enclosed space with a full flight of other people means you’re guaranteed to have to fight off some viruses afterward. I like to breathe in a drop of OnGuard Protective blend for a minute or two as soon as we find our seats, and for the kids I apply the pre-diluted ‘Touch’ rollerbottle across their neck and down their spine. Cinnamon, Clove, Rosemary, Eucalyptus, and Wild Orange make for the perfect combo of antioxidants and provide powerful immune support. And, if they do end up picking up something (because let’s face it, kids are mini germ spreaders,) you can continue to apply this blend several times a day to help the body fight it off.

Sleep, Meltdowns & More:

We may or may not have learned a hard lesson about flight times when travelling with kids (hint: Waking at 2:45am for the flight there, and getting HOME at the same time coming back… is not the best idea ever). To help get them back onto normal sleeping habits (or to help calm them during a meltdown) I love Serenity (calming blend) on their feet, neck, wrists, or behind the ears. And often I’ll combine a few drops with Balance (grounding blend) in a roller bottle, and dilute it with fractionated coconut oil to create my own DIY ‘calm child’ blend.

Too much SUN:

Our fair skinned babies being exposed to the Mexican rays in the middle of winter even for short periods of time meant we needed a little extra skin soothing afterwards. We use this easy DIY after sun spray all summer long when we get a little too red. It feels amazing and really works to both soothe and cool the skin quickly (that’s the Lavender & Peppermint), and speed healing (thanks to the Lavender & Tea Tree oil).

I could go on about the oils we used for other things, like headaches and muscle tension, or the supplements we took daily to help with energy levels and detox, but I’ll stop here. I’m so grateful for these little tools from nature every single day, and even more so when we’re away from home.

If you’re a mom, and have little ones in your life that make for a few wildcards when you’re on vacation – trust me when I say this: You need essential oils in your life.
